When you actually need custom software

Not every workflow needs a bespoke build. Sometimes a spreadsheet plus discipline wins. Here's how we decide.

Custom software is powerful and expensive. We only recommend it when off-the-shelf tools force painful workarounds.

Good reasons to build

  • Your process is the product (logistics, clinics, education ops)
  • Staff are copying data between three tools daily
  • Reporting is always late because nothing is connected
  • Compliance or data ownership rules out generic SaaS

Bad reasons to build

“We want an app because competitors have one” without a clear user problem. Or rebuilding something Notion, Shopify, or Zoho already does well enough.

If you're unsure, start with a discovery week. We'll map the workflow and tell you honestly whether to buy, configure, or build.
