SEO basics that still move the needle

Search changes constantly, but the fundamentals are stubbornly stable. Get these right before chasing anything clever.

SEO advice online swings between “it's dead” and “one weird trick.” The truth is duller: a handful of basics still account for most of the results.

Write for a real question

Each page should answer something a person would actually type or ask. If you can't say what question a page answers, search engines will struggle to place it too.

Make the site fast and mobile-friendly

This overlaps with performance work, and it's not optional — most searches happen on phones, and speed is a ranking factor you control.

Get the technical foundations right

  • Clear, descriptive page titles and meta descriptions
  • A sensible URL and heading structure
  • A sitemap and clean internal links so pages can be found

Earn a few good links

A handful of mentions from reputable, relevant sites beats a hundred spammy ones. Do genuinely useful work and links tend to follow.

None of this is glamorous, but it compounds. Nail the basics for a few months before spending money on anything fancier.
